1EdTech & Penn State LTI Center of Excellence
The 1EdTech Centers of Excellence (CoE) program recognizes Penn State as a Center for Excellence in adhering to 1EdTech Learning Consortium standards in their work with Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) tools, particularly in LTI procurement. Our Mission
Penn State is committed to ensuring that all services are LTI 1.3 Advantage Certified, and can fully integrate within Canvas, the Learning Management System. LTI Advantage provides instructors and students with seamless access to digital content and technology tools with an additional layer of data security, protecting student data across our learning tools ecosystem.
At Penn State, the Courseware website lists all requested digital applications or software used by students, faculty, or staff in the classroom. The site also includes an informational section about Canvas integrations. Here, instructors can request new learning tools or check the status of already requested tools.
Penn State works in partnership with a community of educators, developers, researchers, and vendors.
We are committed to:
Build a repertoire of best practices to empower faculty and students with innovative technology-driven digital learning
Facilitate and participate in professional development opportunities to prepare faculty and staff to adopt standards-based EdTech tools through webinars and hackathons

Usefulness
Implementing LTI Advantage features enables institutions to move beyond first-generation learning architecture by enabling deeper integration that ensures better teaching and learning experiences.
Accessibility
Institutional Support
Security
To achieve 1EdTech certification and to maintain compliance, each tool must re-certify annually to verify the proper security operation and the data transfer processes. Penn State requires LTI Advantage certification for all Canvas integrations. The Penn State Office of Information Security reviews each tool during its internal approval process.
Integration Requirements
Penn State conducts an internal review of each tool, and the following offices must approve before the tool is enabled in Canvas:
- Penn State IT
- OIS (Security)
- Registrar (FERPA compliance)
After a demonstration and an initial call with the vendor to learn how the tool works, documentation and resources are gathered to create training and knowledge base articles to support the use of the tool.
Communication
Canvas Advisory Group, Course Liaisons, and Support Teams:
Depending on the expected usage of the tool, Penn State may notify the single requestor that the tool has been approved and enabled in Canvas.
For larger tools, Penn State will communicate through various TLT channels that the tool is available for broader adoption.
