Zoom: Recovering Recordings Queued in Trash for Deletion

Sep 14, 2022 | News

Zoom Recordings saved in the Zoom Cloud will be available for 30 days from the date it was recorded, after which the recordings will be moved to trash and queued for permanent deletion after an additional 30 days.

Zoom Recordings saved in the Zoom Cloud applies to all recordings, including those that may have been previously extended or manually excluded from deletion by the user.

During the additional 30-day deletion period, users can retrieve those Zoom recordings if needed by following these instructions:

  1. Sign into your Penn State Zoom account by visiting psu.zoom.us
  2. Click on Recordings in the left column navigation menu.
  3. In the upper right of the page, click on “Trash.” You should have a list of items in the trash from the past 30 days.
  4. Then select the event/recording, click on “Recover” on the far right.
  5. Once your recording is recovered, store the recording in a permanent location such as Kaltura. The recording will again return to the trash within 24 hours.

Once Zoom recordings are deleted from trash, individual recordings will not be available in the Zoom Cloud and are not recoverable. Please refer to this knowledge base article on How Zoom Trash Works for more information.

Please note that all Zoom recordings are already available in Kaltura for long-term storage.

All Recordings are stored in Kaltura

All recordings initiated by a Zoom meeting are automatically uploaded to the host’s Kaltura MediaSpace. Kaltura is the long-term storage for all recordings.

When sharing recordings, use the Kaltura recording links not the Zoom links in the Zoom Cloud. Instructions are available in this knowledge base article, Kaltura: Sharing a Link to Your Media File.

To make Kaltura media available to students in your Canvas course, enable the Media Gallery in the navigation tab under Course Settings. Check out how to add Kaltura media to a Canvas course for additional information.
