On May 29, 2024, Penn State IT will perform its regular archiving of older Canvas courses. Beginning April 16, 2024, you may choose to delay particular courses from being archived by using the in-Canvas Course Archive Manager tool.

In order to comply with the University’s General Retention Schedule for student grades and to improve the functionality of Canvas, Penn State has developed an archiving process. This process is intended for grade retention. It is not intended for long-term storage of course material.

NOTE: To retain course material for future use, please use a Master Course instead of relying on the archiving process. Please refer to Canvas: Request a Master Course (KB0011048) for instructions.

Archiving on May 29 includes:

  • All LionPATH courses taught prior to and including Spring 2023 (LionPATH term 2231).
  • All LionPATH courses that you may have previously opted out of archiving between Fall 2022 (LionPATH term 2228) and before, inclusive.

Non-LionPATH courses, including Master, Manually Created, and Sandbox courses will not be  archived on May 29, 2024.

Long-term Storage on April 16, 2024, includes:

  • All LionPATH courses taught prior to and including Spring 2021 (LionPATH term 2211).

On April 16, 2024, Spring 2019 (LionPATH term 2191) will be permanently deleted from long-term storage.

Check out the knowledge base articles below for more information on how to use the Course Archive Manager tool. You may also use this tool to restore archived courses.

When a course is archived, it will no longer appear on your Canvas Dashboard or in your All Courses List.

When a course is placed in Long Term Storage, it will no longer appear on your Canvas Dashboard or in your All Courses List.  Course materials and student grades can be retrieved through a request to the IT Service Desk. Please refer to the Penn State Knowledge Base article on Canvas: Long-Term Archival Storage for more information.

For a complete description, including schedules, timelines, and a description of what is archived and what is not archived, please refer to the full Canvas Archive Policy.
